Interior Designer Elkhart Goshen Indiana
Pattern is the arrangement and repetition of lines and shapes to create a unified design.
So, if you already understand line, shape and form, you'll see pattern in a brand new way! Pattern is seen in printed and woven textiles such as upholstery and drapery fabric, flooring, rugs and carpeting. But pattern is also seen in wall coverings, wood grain, and any surface that has texture (like tile and marble and granite - see tile pattern guide below)
Patterns are frequently combined in interior design. Some combinations work well together and some seem incompatible to each other.
I use a process called pattern scheming to come up with patterns that play well together by starting with a fabric or hard surface or other design element that my client loves. This becomes the pattern of emphasis because it is loved and will be used in the decor plan
The other patterns are not set in stone and are used as part of the total composition while being evaluated for color, shape, line and space in relationship to each other and on their own. I don't rush and I don't settle. If the combination doesn't give me 'goose bumps' (or my client), it's not right yet.
To simplify the process for my clients I often recommend they choose a pattern with organic or curved lines, one with straight lines and a geometric in the opposite scale of their pattern of emphasis.
One way to select pattern for your window treatments, bedding and upholstery projects would be to purchase yardage of each fabric and then lay them out in a well lit room on a table or pin board where you can review for a period of several days or weeks.....or months.....take your time. Design elements are expensive. You want your heart to sing each time you look at the composition you've created. Scheming is the decorative layer to interior design - which means, there are no rules (only principles) so it takes practice before you're good at it.
If you don't have time, can't figure it out or are overwhelmed with all the other details of your project, there is a reason! This takes time and talent to figure out the perfect scheme - which means it may make sense to delegate to somebody with more experience (wink, wink). So, send me an email to help speed up the process and create a cohesive look. If you already know what you like and you've already done all the research to narrow down your selections, you may find my fixed fee scheming design development package called: Online Single Room Design will help you pull it all together cohesively. This single room online design package will show you how your patterns and color work together in a composition. This makes design decisions easy peasy and so much fun! And you'll look like a design genius to your friends and family!
Until next time, Many blessings, (Numbers 6: 24-26)

About this blog...
I began writing this blog in May 2016 after discovering that my mother always wanted to be a writer. She has Alzheimer's disease and she'll never realize her dream. Sometimes in our deepest grief we are motivated to encourage others to fearlessly be themselves so that their gifts and stories are shared. I mean, how else can we change the world?. So I began to record the things that reflect who I am and what is important to me, because one day my memories too, may be gone and what would that mean to the people God gave me to care for and the good works He gave me to do? So, here is where I share the important stuff so that you can learn real design, not decorator tricks, but fundamental and salient concepts to apply so that you can create your own exemplary home and so that my family and I can remember the life we lived and created here in our home, our sacred place. Because my work is important, this is also where I share my favorite design projects and how good design enhanced their lives as well. I hope you're inspired and encouraged as I share my memories, my work, my mission & my life. Many blessings, (Numbers 6: 24-26)
