How is the creative part of interior design going for you? I believe we are all created in God's image (Genesis 3) and therefore we are all creative. But creating a successful interior design plan and making smart design choices is like any skill or talent - first you got to know what to do before you can do it. There are a lot of 'moving parts' that have nothing to do with 'style assumptions' and yet depend on each other to function well and look cohesive. So without professional interior design knowledge & experience or a professional interior design coach to equip you, your own attempts at creating beautiful spaces might lead to frustrating results, mistakes, miscommunications, unmet expectations, disappointment, wasted money, time and stress and keep you stuck!
So.....If you would like to avoid typical DIY design mistakes - read on!
Commercial Interior Design is an extremely important part of any company's branding. Not just for visitors but also for the employees the company attracts and retains. I follow a simple 'think it', 'see it', 'do it' process and this CEO had the 'think it' phase well planned!
Wanna see how the practical and the pretty came together for His vision?
If there is one thing I see consistently over the years, is that bad things happen to good people on a good team with good intentions when they begin a new interior design project without a being able to communicate exactly what they want and need to those who will help them.
Are you getting ready to downsize your home? Here's how I helped this lovely couple go from overwhelmed to on a roll.
"We had good intentions and started on a few updates but just got overwhelmed!"
"Dear Karen, We have lived in our home for over 25 years and are ready to downsize. We have a lot of decisions to make about what to keep and what to get rid of and we are stuck! We've also talked to a few realtors and know we have to freshen it up before we sell if we want to get top dollar. Can you help us prepare our home for sale without judging our style or breaking the bank?"
I'd like to dedicate this post to everyone who has ever felt glassy eyed while standing in front of thousands of paint chips in the store!
The # 1 Mistake everyone is making when choosing paint color is.....
Just like the conductor of a fine orchestra leads his woodwinds, brass, percussion and strings to work their magic; you too, need to take point on your design project and lead. You are the axis around which your design project revolves and are the final arbiter of both form and function and will live with the results. Therefore......
,,,, your first step in empowering you in your role as a savvy design enthusiast - is to master your understanding of the technical side & the process of interior design so you can speak the language, set expectations and get what you want and need. Because here's the truth about a professionally pulled together space: just like a symphony - it requires a lot of work, time and trial and error experience. So don't beat yourself up or someone else if you are struggling to create a space that reflects your values and supports your vision. Because professional interior designed spaces take hours of work, out of the box thinking, technical knowledge and skill. But middle class America can still benefit from living in these magical spaces if they become aware of where they're going and why before they pick up the phone and start calling general contractors. Or in the case of a redesign, before they start shopping (and returning).
I believe that all building and design projects start out with good intentions. But I have found that many good folks with good intentions fail at design because of design misconceptions, mindsets and lack of technical design knowledge. Don't feel bad - we've all been there. Change alone is stressful but putting the cart in front of the horse or believing everything we hear makes a stressful project quickly turn into a project that is stuck and can't move forward or is full of design regrets and broken relationships. God is the master Designer and Artist and first revealed himself to us through His creation. He also designs on purpose and so should you.
About this blog...
I began writing this blog in May 2016 after discovering that my mother always wanted to be a writer. She had Alzheimer's disease and never realized her dream. Sometimes in our deepest grief we are motivated to encourage others to fearlessly be themselves so that their gifts and stories are shared. I mean, how else can we change the world? So I began to record the things that reflect who I am and what is important to me, because one day my memories too, may be gone and what would that mean to the people God gave me to care for and the good works He gave me to do? So, here is where I share the important stuff so that you can learn real design, not decorator tricks, but fundamental and salient concepts to apply so that you can create your own legacy home and so that my family and I can remember the life we lived and created here in our home, our sacred place. I hope you're inspired and encouraged as I share my memories, my work, my mission & my life. Hugs & blessings, (Numbers 6: 24-26)
