Texture is the relative smoothness or roughness of a surface and is read both physically by touch and visually as well.
Pattern is the arrangement and repetition of lines and shapes to create a unified design.
I once heard my college Professor say, "all design first begins with line, so if you can please the eye with line you have a masterpiece!"
Color is the most emotional and most personal of all the design elements--and there are thousands of them (maybe even more)! And because all decorating decisions begin with color, it can sometimes be difficult knowing where to start. Why? Because color affects everything - and if you get it wrong, you'll know it every time you walk into the room.
Your home is your canvas to create something beautiful but sometimes unique and beautiful items can be cost prohibitive.....especially here in God's country.
Here's how I create bespoke on a budget (aka 'found items') This blog post gives ideas for remaking your own unique art.
I have a confession to make and a dirty little secret....
"Dear Karen, We have lived in our home for over 25 years and are ready to downsize. We have a lot of decisions to make about what to keep and what to get rid of. We've also talked to a few realtors and know we have to freshen it up before we sell if we want to get top dollar. Can you help us prepare our home for sale without judging our style or breaking the bank?"
If you're finding the Summer Olympics exciting this year then you'll also enjoy our Olympic style event we fondly call the Savage Summer Smack Down! In years past, when the weatherman called for extreme summer conditions here in small town mid-America, team Savage would get out the slip and slide and practice their own Olympic style moves. Let's see who won the gold....
This blog post if full of ideas on remaking vintage furniture. Check back often as I constantly am working on projects.
We purchased an old farmhouse built in 1900 that was a blend of turn of the century charm and bold 1960's design style....and I'm not talking an iconic Eames chair but instead...
About this blog...
I began writing this blog in May 2016 after discovering that my mother always wanted to be a writer. She had Alzheimer's disease and never realized her dream. Sometimes in our deepest grief we are motivated to encourage others to fearlessly be themselves so that their gifts and stories are shared. I mean, how else can we change the world?. So I began to record the things that reflect who I am and what is important to me, because one day my memories too, may be gone and what would that mean to the people God gave me to care for and the good works He gave me to do? So, here is where I share the important stuff so that you can learn real design, not decorator tricks, but fundamental and salient concepts to apply so that you can create your own exemplary home and so that my family and I can remember the life we lived and created here in our home, our sacred place. Because my work is important, this is also where I share my favorite design projects and how good design enhanced their lives as well. I hope you're inspired and encouraged as I share my memories, my work, my mission & my life. Many blessings, (Numbers 6: 24-26)
