Interior Designer Elkhart Goshen Indiana
I once heard my college Professor say, "all design first begins with line, so if you can please the eye with line you have a masterpiece!"
We all know that a line is a connection of two or more points that are either straight, curved, thick or thin. But did you know the eye also perceives line when two planes meet and....that our eyes are constantly trying to make sense out of the lines we see and perceive?
Line gives birth to form and shape (feel free to review it so that it goes from your head to your heart) and is responsible for establishing a sense of harmony, unity and even contrast in a living space. Line is used to create height, width or the impression of movement but, like all design elements, line can also be used to influence psychological responses as well (hence the science behind design).
Unless you have an architectural drawing or sketch of your room you may not even notice the lines. But the walls, moldings, windows, doors, furniture, fireplace.....even the art on the wall creates lines, planes and grids. This is another reason, why floor plans and elevations and all line drawings are so important to a successful design project (and they reduce typical DIY design mistakes by 90% making them worth every penny)
An abundance of vertical lines gives a room a formal feel and makes it seem more spacious. Horizontal lines create a more relaxed and cozy feel. Curved or organic lines create an informal appearance that seems both unstructured and spontaneous.
Become aware of any obvious impact the linear elements have on the look and feel of your space. Then you can build on that design element or use other elements to balance it.
Interior Design is so amazing isn't it! Did you realize all the science and math behind the art? There are many myths and misunderstandings about what interior design really is. And our heroes on Fixer Upper make it look so easy. But here's the truth: shopping for expensive, pretty items is only a small part of interior design. HGTV doesn't show the backstory! Successful interior design combines, math, science and beautiful design elements in a way that looks cohesive, inspires you and fits your lifestyle and budget. There are so many little details that affect the big picture. Line drawings, called elevations and floor plans help us make sense of the space and the planes. and connect the dots in a way that looks good and functions for our lifestyle within the constrains of space. Please don't overlook this important part of your project!
If you'd like help with your line drawings please send me an email. Simple line drawings start at $350 per room.
If you prefer to do it yourself, send me an email and ask for my complementary PDF design guide that explains how to do it.
Until next time, Hugs & blessings (Numbers 6: 24-26)

About this blog...
I began writing this blog in May 2016 after discovering that my mother always wanted to be a writer. She had Alzheimer's disease and never realized her dream. Sometimes in our deepest grief we are motivated to encourage others to fearlessly be themselves so that their gifts and stories are shared. I mean, how else can we change the world?. So I began to record the things that reflect who I am and what is important to me, because one day my memories too, may be gone and what would that mean to the people God gave me to care for and the good works He gave me to do? So, here is where I share the important stuff so that you can learn real design, not decorator tricks, but fundamental and salient concepts to apply so that you can create your own exemplary home and so that my family and I can remember the life we lived and created here in our home, our sacred place. Because my work is important, this is also where I share my favorite design projects and how good design enhanced their lives as well. I hope you're inspired and encouraged as I share my memories, my work, my mission & my life. Many blessings, (Numbers 6: 24-26)
