You can design your own beautiful and meaningful home on a budget! Today luxury interior design is not about decorating one-upmanship - it's about preparing a place for a prepared people based on what God lays on your hearts and in your hands . To do this wisely, might mean using a high-low mix of materials and chic flea market finds or even remaking vintage items instead of buying new. This guarantees originality in a way that luxury brands and local stores can not and crafts a space that is layered, collected and timeless. Mastering the perfect mix is however challenging because it combines both interior design skill with DIY savvy and careful budgeting. To make it easier, I follow a process. otherwise it takes forever, I can't focus and I make too many boo boos - can you relate! Will my home ever grace the pages of Architectural Digest? No, but it blends different opinions, unique personalities and distinct passions in a fresh, simple, timeless way that checks off everyone's 'boxes' and inspires and refreshes me daily as I navigate stress grief with my mother.
Have you ever wondered what the secret is to designing a beautiful garden? I believe successful design, whether, inside or out, doesn't just check off one box . Every decision affects the others (form+function+inspiration=success). So design success starts with knowing what you want. That means that doing your 'homework' before the buying and the digging will ensure the process is easier, quicker and calmer for everyone involved.
Do you know how to start an interior design project? What if I told you that the secret to creating beautiful, meaningful homes doesn't start by looking at gorgeous pictures on HGTV, google or even popular home magazines? It doesn't take hours of pinning on pinterest either. Wanna know the real secret sauce?
Commercial Interior Design is an extremely important part of any company's branding. Not just for visitors but also for the employees the company attracts and retains.
If there is one thing I see consistently over the years, is that bad things happen to good people on a good team with good intentions when they begin a new construction project without a plan.
"Dear Karen, We have lived in our home for over 25 years and are ready to downsize. We have a lot of decisions to make about what to keep and what to get rid of. We've also talked to a few realtors and know we have to freshen it up before we sell if we want to get top dollar. Can you help us prepare our home for sale without judging our style or breaking the bank?"
We purchased an old farmhouse built in 1900 that was a blend of turn of the century charm and bold 1960's design style....and I'm not talking an iconic Eames chair but instead...
I have the privilege of working with the most beautiful clients---unfortunately this client's kitchen did not match her sparkling personality.
I'd like to dedicate this post to everyone who has ever felt glassy eyed while standing in front of thousands of paint chips in the store!
The Number 1 Mistake everyone is making when choosing paint color!
The goal of this homeowner was to sell their home quickly and for top dollar so when they heard this 'free' staging advise from a realtor, "You only need a good cleaning and decluttering" they went with it.....but that's not what happened....
About this blog...
I began writing this blog in May 2016 after discovering that my mother always wanted to be a writer. She had Alzheimer's disease and never realized her dream. Sometimes in our deepest grief we are motivated to encourage others to fearlessly be themselves so that their gifts and stories are shared. I mean, how else can we change the world?. So I began to record the things that reflect who I am and what is important to me, because one day my memories too, may be gone and what would that mean to the people God gave me to care for and the good works He gave me to do? So, here is where I share the important stuff so that you can learn real design, not decorator tricks, but fundamental and salient concepts to apply so that you can create your own exemplary home and so that my family and I can remember the life we lived and created here in our home, our sacred place. Because my work is important, this is also where I share my favorite design projects and how good design enhanced their lives as well. I hope you're inspired and encouraged as I share my memories, my work, my mission & my life. Many blessings, (Numbers 6: 24-26)
